h3. Information Technology Working Group - 2013 Activity Report
This WG was established during the 2009 CIMA Meeting as the "Internet Presence Working Group" in order to develop a collaborative workspace for CIMA. The 2012 CIMA Meeting decided to widen the scope of the working group and to and to rename the WG accodingly.

The CIMA wiki has not suffered any relevant changes, and its use follows the pattern of previous years.
h4. CASI decision on WGS84
The CASI 2012 meeting decided to impose the use of the WGS84 Earth model in all air sport activities. However, some commissions had problems to comply with the new rule. CASI then decided to create a working group to analyse the problem and propose a solution.
The so called "CASI Mathematics Working Group" was created, composed by Hans Åkerstedt (CIA, SWE), José Luis Esteban (CIMA, ESP), Joerg Ewald (CIVL, CHE), Rick Sheppe (IGC, USA). See the [Terms of Reference|^2013 Annex 8 CASI ToR WGS84.pdf] .
The WG delivered its [report to CASI|^2013 Annex 9 Report CASI maths WG pdf.pdf] , where the problem was described and a major revision of GS Chapter 7 was proposed. This was included as a formal [proposal to CASI|^2013 Annex 10 Proposal Maths WG.pdf] and accepted during the 2013 meeting (see [point 12 of the meeting minutes|^CASI 2013 Plenary Meeting - Minutes.pdf] ).
h5. Practical consequences
The new version of the General Section of the Sporting Code allows Air Sports Commissions to decide on the methods to make measurements and calculations that are suitable for their activities.
The ASCs will be responsible to define rules for measurements and calculations as established by the following provisions (the list is not exhaustive):
*7.1 Measurements* * 7.1.2 General. The *methods and standards of precision for measuring and recording* of Position, Distance, Time, Altitude, Mass and other primary values, as well as equipment technical standards, shall be determined by each FAI Air Sport Commission and specified in the appropriate section of the Sporting Code.
* 7.1.8 Mass. Mass shall be determined using scales and methods approved by the Air Sport Commission concerned.
*7.2 Calculations*

* 7.2.1 General. The *methods and standards of precision for calculating* Distance, Bearing, Altitude, Speed, and Scores shall be determined by each FAI Air Sport Commission and specified in the appropriate section of the Sporting Code. * 7.2.2 Earth Model. The Air Sport Commissions are responsible for the *specification of the basis of geometric calculations*. If not otherwise specified by the Air Sport Commissions, the earth model to be used for geometric calculations shall be the WGS84 ellipsoid. If a sphere is specified, it shall be the “FAI Sphere.” If a planar model is to be used, then the projection must be strictly defined. * 7.2.5 Altitude. The *methods for calculations of corrections to measured altitudes* (if required) shall be specified by the Air Sport Commissions.
*7.4 Approvals* * 7.4.1 As an alternative to *specifying algorithms*, each Air Sport Commission may meet its obligation to specify computational methods by *approving specific flight evaluation and scoring programs*. If this method is used, then the ASC must implement procedures for testing, approval, and version control of the flight evaluation and scoring programs.
