If you are a Paramotor pilot from one of the 45 OCA Asian nations then this is your opportunity to represent your nation in a prestigious international event with rather a high profile because of the relationship between the organizers and the Olympic movement.

A message was sent to all FAI member NACs on 26 May 2011 explaining what the event is all about and the procedure for entering a team.

You cannot enter yourself! It must be done by your National Olympic Committee (NOC) in association with your FAI member Aero Club (NAC).

If your nation is not in the list of entries, your job right now is to make sure your NAC gets in touch with your NOC and asks them please to register with the Games organizers (HABGOC) that your country is interested in entering a team in the Powered Paraglider event.

Accreditations submitted before 11 Feb 2012 have a Chinese Visa built in. It may still be possible to enter the games up until the deadline of 30 April 2012 but all these people will have to also get a Chinese visa by the normal channels.

Next steps

  • Each participant (and this probably includes team officials) must complete and sign an entry form. This must also be signed and stamped by your NAC and your NOC and returned to HABGOC before 30 April 2012, 24:00 Beijing Local Time; UTC +8
  • Practice the tasks. Since we want all competing pilots to be adequately competent, the [local regulations and task catalogue] should be used by pilots as a training aid. Most tasks have a note indicating what constitutes a 'good' performance. Note that giant (12m) inflatable pylons will be used in many of the slalom tasks.
  • All competing pilots must have a FAI Sporting licence issued by their NAC, there must therefore be an on-going co-operation between NACs and NOCs in the selection of National Teams.
  • All competing pilots must have adequate 3rd party insurance, (the required minimum is stated in the local regulations). Medical insurance is highly recommended.
  • All pilots are invited to read the ABG doping control guide. Since it is catastrophic for any competitor to get a positive test it is essential that all pilots are aware of the rules and vital that anyone taking any palliative drug obtains a TUE (Theraputic Use Exemption) in advance of the event. A good first step is to read the overview anti-doping-and-me available from the anti-doping programme section of the FAI website.
  • The Air Sports Federation of China will be offering to rent Paramotor power units, in this case pilots will only need to bring with them their canopy and safety equipment (helmet, reserve Etc). Otherwise teams will have to plan how they are going to get their equipment there. The organizers do have a freight department but it appears their effort is mostly aligned towards temporary importation of equipment by media organizations but it might be worth giving them a try. Further information is available in the Press customs and freight manual and appendices document on the ABG website.
