- Since the millenium, Microlight Autogyros have increasingly participated in national microlight championships and participated 'unoficially' at EMC 2000, WMC 2005 and EMC 2010. CIG (the FAI Rotorcraft Commission) did not ever try to hold championships for any kind of Autogyros, they are not allowed to compete for FAI medals in Microlight Championships because they are not considered a type of microlight.
- In an effort to break this deadlock, the November 2009 CIMA plenary voted unanimously to include two new classes of Microlight within FAI Class R, RGL1 and RGL2, thus creating 'Microlight Autogyros' which could compete in FAI Microlight Championships.
- The proposal cannot become valid until some changes have been made to FAI's Sporting Code, General Section and these must be agreed by CASI, the FAI Air Sport General Commission
. - CASI only meets once annually. Proposals were put to CASI in October 2010
. The FAI Rotorcraft Commission
(CIG) objected. A compromize was reached where CIMA and CIG should co-operate to find a solution. - The November 2010 CIMA Plenary confirmed the decision it made in 2009.
- CIMA Delegates were asked about the status of Microlight Autogyros in their country.
- Correspondence with CIG in 2010 and 2011 failed to find any solution, CIMA therefore submitted its proposals to the October 2011 CASI meeting
to change the Sporting Code, General Section and these were published as part of the [CASI meeting Agenda] on 2 September 2011. - The CASI meeting of 13 October 2011 decided to accept all CIMA's proposals
, but subject to review at the 2012 CASI meeting.
Provisions regarding Microlight Autogyros were first included in the 2010 edition of FAI Section 10, but they did not become valid until 13 October 2011.
